Back in 2021, we embarked on a mission to banish the annual struggle of hanging icicle lights from a precarious ladder! The idea? Permanent LEDs! I’ve always enjoyed a good soldering project (and let’s face it, hanging lights on an icy roof above the garage is not fun), so the idea of lighting up the house year-round with a DIY project was pretty appealing.

Kulp Lights seemed like the perfect solution, and I figured my background in Electronics, Linux, PHP, and Amateur Radio would make it a breeze… (famous last words, right?).

Truth be told, our permanent roof lights have become a bit of an annual tradition in themselves - the tradition of repair! Every year, something needs a little tweaking, but hey, we’re getting pretty good at it!

More importantly, this project has become a wonderful family tradition. We bundle up, grab my trusty 90s karaoke machine, and head out to the curb to enjoy the show. There’s something magical about dancing, running, swaying, and (yes) shivering to the music under the glow of our own Christmas lights.
